I have an extra 20 pounds I’d like to lose but am very sensitive to anything diet

Question: Dr. Ettinger,

I am 52 yrs old and have already gone through menopause. I get very confused about what supplements I should be taking. I am not on any hormones and only take a multivitamin. I have an extra 20 pounds I’d like to lose but am very sensitive to anything diet.

Any suggestions?

Thank you,

Gina

Answer: Gina,

Thank you for the question. This shows me you are ready for a positive change in your life.

CaliTrim (lipotropic formula*) 1/3x day, Liquid CoQ10 (1/2 Tbsp 2x/day) and Liquid B Complex (1 tsp/day), combined with starch reduction (anything made from wheat, corn, rice, potato, rye, oat….) will help you to reduce weight gradually and naturally. STARCH REDUCTION IS VERY IMPORTANT! If you can get in 30 minutes or fast-pace walking 3 or 4 times per week, you will lose the weight even faster. Plus, you will have more energy; you heart and lungs will be healthier; you will lower your risk of developing most diseases; your sleep will be improved and more than likely, your attitude toward life and living will rise to new levels. It’s a win-win-win opportunity.

*Lipotropic compounds are those which help catalyse the breakdown of fat during metabolism in the body.

Choline is the major lipotrope in mammals and other known lipotropes are important only insofar as they contribute to the synthesis of choline. (Barak, 1973)

A lipotropic nutrient is one that promotes or encourages the export of fat from the liver. Lipotropics are necessary for the maintenance of a healthy liver as well as burning the exported fat for additional energy. Without lipotropics such as choline and inositol, fats and bile can become trapped in the liver, causing severe problems such as cirrhosis and blocking fat metabolism. Choline is essential for fat metabolism. Choline functions as a methyl donor and it is required for proper liver function. Like inositol, choline is a lipotropic. Inositol exerts lipotropic effects as well. An “unofficial” member of the B vitamins, inositol has even been shown to relieve depression and panic attacks. Methionine, an essential amino acid, is the major lipotropic compound in humans. When estrogen levels are high, the body requires more methionine. Estrogens reduce bile flow through the liver and increase bile cholesterol levels. Methionine helps deactivate estrogens.

Methionine levels also affect the amount of sulfur-containing compounds, such as glutathione, in the liver. Glutathione and other sulfur-containing peptides (small proteins) play a critical role in defending against toxic compounds. When higher levels of toxic compounds are present, more methionine is needed.

Choline assists detoxification reactions in the liver. Although choline can be synthesized from methionine or serine, recent evidence indicates that choline is an essential nutrient.

Betaine hydrochloride is a powerful lipotropic and increases gastric acid.[1]

Whey Protein Gold Isolate Powder in capsules?

Question: Dr. Ettinger,

I prefer whey protein isolate capsules to the powder form. Could you recommend a high quality capsule that would compare to your Whey Protein Gold Isolate Powder

Thank you so much

Steve

Answer: Steve,

1 scoop of powder would add-up to about 30-40 caps (estimate). I don’t think that there is anyone out there that is selling whey isolate in caps. It may be easier and cheaper to go to a health food or on-line and buy the largest caps you can find, and fill your own. Why not just mix in with some strawberries and raspberries or add a banana. That will really hid the taste. Sorry I can’t help more.

Magnesium and Heart Health

Calm - Magnesium Caps from California Academy of Health

Research appearing in the American Journal of Hypertension (published online Aug. 12, 2010) looked at the relationship between serum magnesium levels and carotid artery plaques. The subjects were 728 Japanese men and women with a mean age of 67. Low serum magnesium was found to be strongly associated with increased IMT (intima-media thickness) and carotid plaques.

This makes sense because magnesium influences vascular (blood vessel) tone and is a cofactor for acetylcholine-induced endothelium dependent relaxation (meaning it helps blood vessels relax). Other research that appeared in Magnesium Research (Volume 1, Number 1, February 2010) looked at magnesium supplementation and its effect on the health of the blood vessel lining. The subjects of the study were 60 elderly diabetic patients. Thirty of the subjects, mean age 71, received 368 mg of magnesium supplementation (given as 4.5 g of magnesium pidolate). The other 30 received no supplementation and acted as a control group. Endothelial (blood vessel lining) function was evaluated by flow-mediated dilatation of the brachial artery at the start of the study and again after 30 days of intervention. Supplementation with magnesium resulted in a significant improvement in blood vessel lining function (ability to dilate after a period without oxygen – that’s a good thing).

Our “Calm” is our best selling magnesium formula and is a great magnesium supplement for people with cardiac and blood pressure issues, hypertension, cardiac arrhythmias, tachycardia, psychological stress, panic attacks and leg cramps. CALM contains 400 milligrams of magnesium per cap.

Dogs with osteo-arthritis can benefit, like humans, from omega 3’s, MSM and glucosamine

Dogs with arthritis can really benefit from glucosamine and omega 3's

Question: Hi Dr. E,

I seek your advice regarding my eight year old collie.  he is about 90 lbs and is having trouble laying down and getting up and his general mobility seems difficult for him.  our vet recommended fish oil as well as glucosamine/chondroitin. I am taking three capsules of your ultra omega 3-6-9 and i was wondering if this might be a good regimen for my dog.

Thanks so much.

Steve

Answer: Steve,

Your veterinarian gave you good advice. Our Omega 3,6,9 (3) and Liquid Glucosamine and Chondroitin with MSM and Vitamin C (1/2 tbsp) would be great.

Omega-3 fatty acids:

There is a lot of ongoing work on the effects of antioxidants like DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid), the primary omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil. In addition to serving an important role in reducing the joint inflammation associated with arthritis and degenerative joint disease, omega-3s are important in cardiac health, and in suppressing the inflammation associated with chronic kidney disease, gastrointestinal problems and inflammatory skin problems, as well as promoting mental alertness in older individuals.  There is an excellent controlled study showing that feeding a diet enriched with DHA, EPA and other nutritional supplements, such as MSM and glucosamine, results in a substantial and measurable improvement in older dogs’ memory and level of mobility. Although it’s difficult to make exact recommendations, it seems safe to say that we can help our pets by insuring an adequate intake of omega 3 fatty acids.

Glucosamine:

Glucosamine is the primary component of nearly all multi-ingredient arthritis formulas and seems to be the most important. It is essential for the formation of joint cartilage and synovial fluid.  Glucosamine should certainly be an ingredient in whatever formula you use.

Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM):

MSM has value as an anti-inflammatory agent. This anti-inflammatory effect slows the progression of arthritis and relieves pain.  All dogs showing chronic joint pain should be receiving MSM regularly.  It seems to work nearly as well as aspirin and is much less likely to cause problems.

Nutrients needed to heal after joint surgery

Question: Hey,

I’m an avid bike racer and have been using the CAH liquid multivitamin for some time now.  Great product. I had the misfortune of tearing up my labrum on the right shoulder and jut returned from surgery, which went well.  I’d like to know what supplements or nutritional items could be helpful in speeding and ensuring a full and strong recovery. Would you be able to make some recommendations or point me to a few things tat may be helpful?

Many thanks!

Ben

Answer: Ben,

I’ve had two shoulder surgeries and one knee surgery due to motocross injuries – I have become quite informed about what it takes to heal back to pre-injury status . The key to recovery, nutritionally speaking is: whey protein @ 1 scoop, tons of vitamin C & rutin (I love our formula – Power – C @ 4 per day), and if you are taking our Liquid Power, double-up for a few weeks. A product that will also be very beneficial is MSM @ 2 grams per day.

As soon as you are able to move your arm, get a Theraband and use it everyday. Here is a great exercise instruction sheet.

Good luck,

Whey Protein and Lactose Intollerance

August 7, 2009 by

Q: HI, I am confused about all the protein isolates in the market, some say isolated protein others not, and some say lactose free others not, how it can be lactose free if came form the cheese, can you explain for me the difference between yours and the ones in the market on the regular food stores.

Thanks

Andrea
HAVE A GREAT DAY!

A: Andrea,

Whey Protein Isolate is the purest form of whey protein and the since it’s 100% protein it doesn’t contain sugar (lactose). A lactose sensitive person CAN have whey protein. A (dairy) sensitive person is usually sensitive to the casein (milk) protein, not the lactose. I have used whey isolate in my practice for almost 20 years and only the most dairy intolerant people can’t take it.

I only recommend whey as a protein supplement because it also contains immunoglobulins (immune boosters) plus it’s an amazing L-glutathione (immune) booster.

If you are looking for a top-notch whey protein powder, ours is great.

Liquid Weight Loss™ is a nutritional supplement containing Hydrolyzed Collagen, an easily digested and assimilated protein. The collagen protein in Liquid Weight Loss™ (LWL) helps to support the body’s ability to maintain lean muscle tissue, which in turn can facilitate fat loss. In addition, LWL contains Chromium, an important cofactor for carbohydrate utilization, as well as Carnitine, which is an amino acid that is necessary for lipid oxidation. In providing the body with the nutrients needed to utilize fats and sugars more efficiency, LWL can help to maintain a healthy body weight.

Zija Product Comparison

Q: I have an 18-year old who has a “bruised” disc in his back.  A friend of mine suggested giving him a product called Zija which has a produced called Moringa in it.  I tried it and my son seemed to feel better.  While I’m not sure if this is a “cure” for the problem, does CAOH have something comparable to address this problem?  The injury was occurred playing football.  Thanks.

Lodgie James

A: Lodgie,

If that product helped than it was the antioxidant properties in it that created the anti-inflammatory and/or healing reaction. If that’s the case than Absolute Acai, Absolute Goji Powder and Herbal Arthritis and Joint Formula  should really help.

Sincerely,

Acai Berry increases your Energy!

CAOH Acai berries being striped from the palm.Acai Berry provides Sustained Energy! What can you eat that will give you sustained energy throughout the day? CAOH® Acai? Yes!

What does this exotic fruit have that gives you sustained energy throughout the day? Carbohydrates and fiber. But not all carbohydrates give you sustained energy. Carbohydrates, when digested, release glucose, or sugar into our blood. The measure of the extent of the sugar rise caused after a food is eaten is called the Glycemic Index (or GI). The lower the GI of a food, the slower the food is digested and absorbed, producing a gradual rise in blood sugar levels. Foods such as white bread or jelly beans, when eaten, cause your blood sugar to rise very quickly. A blood sugar that is too high or too low is dangerous for our bodies. So when sugar rises, it stimulates the pancreas to release insulin into the blood. Insulin tells all our cells to open up their “gates” and let sugar in. This then causes the blood sugar level to drop again. When we consume foods that release sugar quickly, our bodies tend to release too much insulin.

Too much insulin means that too much sugar is taken up by our cells, and causes our sugar level to drop to under normal levels. This is the low that you usually feel after a sugar “rush”. It does not give you sustained energy and tends to make you feel tired and fatigued. CAOH® Acai berry pulp has a glycemic load of 0.5. The glycemic load (GL) is a relatively new way to determine the impact of carbohydrate in our blood. It gives a fuller picture than GI alone, since it considers the amount of carbohydrate consumed. A GL of 10 or less is considered low, therefore helping control blood sugar levels.

CAOH® Acai has a glycemic load of 0.5, meaning that it provides sustained energy for today’ss busy lifestyle. The dietary fiber in Acai acts like a sponge, mixes with all the digestive juices in our bodies binding to the good we have eaten, and helps to slow down digestion. Instead of getting a sugar rush after a meal, the sugar is released slowly, giving you sustained energy! This also helps control appetite and delays hunger, which may help in a diet program.

Unlike most juices, most of the Acai berries kilo joules come not from sugar but from the healthy unsaturated omega-6 and omega-9 fats. This is one juice you can fell good about drinking! It will fill you up due to its fiber content and at the same time give you sustained energy, unlike other fruit juices! The Acai berry is usually mixed with apple juice, which has a low GI- to give you the same sustained energy as a CAOH® Acai smoothie. So next time that you are looking for a pick-me-up, look for CAOH® Acai at your local health food store.
